Our Story
Kumu Camp & Our Hawaiian Homestead Community
Community-led
Kumu Camp is a community-led effort by the Anahola Hawaiian Homestead Association (AHHA) and its nonprofit arm, the Homestead Community Development Corporation (HCDC).
Together, our organizations deliver programming that strengthens our Native Hawaiian communities, our local economy and creates opportunities for our youth.

The campground was built by Native Hawaiian families and volunteers, to create a family friendly camping facility on our tribal trust lands. Kumu Camp is our expression of stewardship, and welcoming camping guests from around the State of Hawaii, and the globe to experience our beloved Kauai.

The Founding of AHHA
Founded in 1982, AHHA was formed by Native Hawaiian families residing in the Anahola region of Kauai. There are more than 50 Homestead Associations located on every island where tribal trust lands were established by the U.S. Congress under the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act of 1920.
Our lands, totaling 203,000 acres statewide, are held in trust for land allotments to enrolled Native Hawaiians for homes, farms, ranches, business, and community development purposes.
The Founding of HCDC
Founded in 2009, HCDC was envisioned by AHHA and other Homestead Associations on other islands, to implement programs and projects that improve and invest in the well-being of communities. HCDC is a 501c3 tax exempt nonprofit that owns and operates Kumu Camp, with all revenues reinvested in its stewardship and the HCDC community development mission.
At Kumu Camp, our camping guests enjoy the natural beauty of Anahola Bay, whether camping beneath the stars, glamping in a bungalow or yurt, or gathering for a family reunion, or hosting group retreat - your stay at Kumu Camp supports our local nonprofit programs serving families and youth, perpetuates our culture, and helps to sustain our island community.
We invite you to experience Kumu Camp — where every stay gives back to the land and the people who call it home.
